Bunscoil Bhríde Fortnightly Bulletin – 26th May 2022
Dear Parents / Guardians,
We hope all is well with you this fortnight. Our news is as follows:
Tenth Green Flag Celebrations: As announced in our last Bulletin, we are the proud recipients of a TENTH Green Flag. I would like to congratulate Ms. Ryan and our fabulous Green Schools Committee on such a remarkable achievement. There are not many schools in the country that can boast having ten green flags. We are so very fortunate to have an outstanding committee, as well as an extremely supportive whole-school community. Well done everyone! We will raise our Green Flag on Thursday 9th of June. Our school will celebrate the day by taking part in a parade through the town with our green flag. All children will proudly take part in the parade and we invite you to come out along the street to cheer on the girls. We will leave the school at approx. 11.15am and will walk up the town and back to the school, where we will proudly raise our Green Flag.
Bake Sale: Our Sixth Class pupils will hold a fundraising Bake Sale in the school tomorrow, at which all pupils in the school will get the opportunity to attend (see Aladdin app message sent yesterday for more details). The proceeds of the Sale will go towards the purchase of special graduation hoodies for the class, which will bear the school name and signatures of all members of the class. Your support is greatly appreciated.
National Art Competition Winner: Massive congratulations to Anna Biechele; a Fourth Class pupil in Ms. Fitzpatrick’s class, who has won first prize in the senior section of the CPSMA National Art Competition. Anna faced stiff competition from entrants from hundreds of school around the country and we are very proud of her wonderful achievement. Anna was presented with a €300 sports voucher for herself and a digital camera for our school at a ceremony in Cavan on Tuesday. Well done Anna!
Active Schools Week: We are looking forward to celebrating Active School week from Monday 30th May to Friday 10th June. We have lots of fun activities planned for all classes. It promises to be a jam packed fortnight of fun and games. As always, children will only receive Active Homework for the fortnight. All children will be encouraged to wear their school tracksuit (or navy shorts) and appropriate runners everyday. Please ensure your daughter has plenty of lunch and drinks packed and has sun cream applied each day. Don’t forget to keep up to date with the Active School events on our school website. Our class Sports Days will take place on the following days:

Camogie Blitz: Well done to the girls who on a blustery and showery day yeesterday in Ballymany represented our school so well in our first ever Camogie blitz. These girls deserve great praise for attending training and taking on and trying a new and very skillful sport. The girls played two games against Patricians and Scoil Mhuire, both games were very evenly contested and we were thrilled to record a win in our final game against Scoil Mhuire! The team were jubilant in their celebrations and even more so when our own Sarah Doyle was singled out by the referee as player of the tournament. Comhghairdeas Sarah! The panel on the day was as follows: C. Condron, E.Waters, A.O’Donnell, D. Dunne, A.Egan, L.Hancock, N. Livingston, E.Long, C.Maher, K.Mohan, H.Roche, A.Russell, A. Walford, A. Curren, S. Maher, A. Ward, N.Piesik, A.R Murphy, S. Doyle, Á, O’ Loughlin, A. Walford. This team have led the way for budding Bunscoil Bhríde camogie stars of the future. Thanks to Ms. Millane, Ms. Frawley and Mr. O’Sullivan who coach the team after school and to Jason Payne who supplies the schools with hurleys and helmets.
Art Kite Workshops: Ms. Fitzpatrick’s, Ms. Gorman’s and Ms. Coughlan’s Third and Fourth Classes will participate in an Art Kite Workshop in the school on Tuesday 7th June. The Art Kite Workshop offered to us through Kildare Library Services promotes artistic freedom and culminates with participants constructing their kites and learning where and how to fly their kites safely. The girls will work with artists on the day and we look forward to seeing their beautiful kites take flight.
Open Afternoon for New Junior Infants: Next year’s Junior Infants (2022/23 school year) and their parents are invited to an open afternoon in the school on Wednesday 8th June at 1.55pm. The children will get the opportunity to visit their new classroom, meet the current infant teachers and mingle with their new classmates. We look forward to meeting with them and their parents.
Library Visits: We are hoping to arrange visits to Rathangan Library in the coming weeks for as many classes as possible. I would highly recommend that all families join the library and ensure that the girls get the opportunity to visit the library on a regular basis, especially during the summer period. Children should be reading EVERY DAY. Visiting the library is a really important habit to develop for your child and facilitating this for her would be one of the most wonderful gifts you could give her.
Code of Behaviour: Our Code of Behaviour is available to view at www.bunscoilbhride.ie . I wish to remind you all that, as stated in our Code, jewellery (with the exception of small stud earrings at the bottom of each ear and a watch) is not permitted at school. Children should not come to school wearing hoop earrings / dangly earrings / earrings that are larger than a small stud, which are in breach of the code and pose a health and safety risk. Please ensure that children are wearing the correct uniform and that long hair is tied up. Your cooperation in the implementation of our Code of Behaviour is very much appreciated.
Healthy Eating Policy: As you are all aware, we operate a healthy eating policy in the school. Chocolate biscuits / bars, cereal bars, sweets etc. are all prohibited. The policy is available to view at www.bunscoilbhride.ie We ask that all families adhere to the healthy eating policy and support us in promoting healthy eating with the children.
Standardised Testing: Standardised tests are being administered currently with all classes from First to Sixth. A message to all parents of children in these classes was sent out earlier this week, containing important information about the tests. Please ensure that you have read it if you have a daughter in any of these classes. Results of the Drumcondra Primary Reading Test, the Drumcondra Primary Mathematics Test and the Drumcondra Spelling Test (for first to fifth classes only) for all classes from first class to sixth class will be released to parents on Thursday 9th June. As per message sent to parents of children in these classes, I wish to remind you all of the importance of not sharing or discussing specific results with the children.
End-of-Year Reports: End-of-year reports will be released to parents on the Aladdin app on Tuesday 14th June.
Sixth Class Education Passport: The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) has developed a suite of materials to support the reporting and transfer of pupil information from primary to post-primary schools. The materials are presented under the umbrella title of “Education Passport” and are available at www.ncca.ie/transfer. Schools are required to use the NCCA Education Passport materials to support the reporting and transfer of pupil information at the end of sixth class. The Education Passport will be sent to the relevant post-primary school following confirmation of enrolment. Parents of children in sixth class have today received the ‘My Child’s Profile’ sheet for completion by parents/guardians and the ‘My Profile’ sheet for completion by pupils. We ask that you and your child fill these out and return them to the school by Thursday 9th June. They will be sent, along with your daughter’s end-of-year report to her secondary school.
Pupil Accident Insurance: If you have taken out this Pupil Accident Insurance with the school (paid via the Aladdin app at the start of each school year), please be advised that the policy provides 24-hour cover for the full year. All accidents at home, out and about or at school are covered. If you incur any expense arising from an accident, please contact the office and we can provide you with the necessary claim form e.g. if you have had reason to take your child to A&E due to an accident, you can fully recoup the cost incurred.
Sixth Class Graduation: Graduation Mass for our sixth class girls will take place at 10am on Wednesday 22nd June in Rathangan Church. All parents and family members are welcome to attend. All pupils will attend this Mass, which also marks the end of a busy school year. Our sixth class will participate in the ceremony and our school choir led by Ms. De Faoite and Ms. Rowley will provide the music and singing. Following the mass, we will host a celebration for our sixth class pupils and their families, at which we will present the girls with their graduation certificates and hoodies. As has been the tradition in the school over the last number of years (pre-Covid), we are asking again this year that the parents from our current fifth class would help to host the celebration for us by baking for the event and serving tea and coffee.
Dates for the Diary: All dates for the diary for this term are marked on the calendar in the Aladdin Connect app.
Half day for inservice: We have been directed by the Department of Education and Skills to close for a half-day this term to facilitate staff inservice in the new Primary Language Curriculum. The school will close for this purpose on Thursday 2nd June at 11.50am.
June Bank Holiday Closure: The school will close on Friday 3rd June and on Monday 6th June for the June Bank Holiday weekend.
Kind regards,
Maria Rogerson
