Primary Debating Competition

Success for our debating team

The 6th Class debating team took part in the Quarter Finals of the Kildare Primary Debating Competition last Friday, March 8th 2019. They were opposing the motion ‘To be serious about climate change is to give up eating meat’ against Scoil Eoin Phóil in Leixlip. Ellen Adlum captained the team, Kate Byrne was speaker two and Ciara Dunne was speaker three. They were assisted in their preparations by their fellow teammates Maura Ennis, Emma Keenan and Libby Fallon. All six girls worked very hard on writing the speeches, researching the topic and preparing rebuttals. Ellen, Kate and Ciara spoke passionately, confidently and convincingly on the day and they included some excellent rebuttals which is the key to effective debating. The opposition were tough but Bunscoil Bhríde emerged as well-deserved winners. They will debate in the semi-final against Ballyshannon N.S., Kilcullen, on Thursday March 21st 2019 in Kildare Education Centre. They will be proposing the motion ‘Ireland shouldn’t have water charges.’ Best of luck girls!
